holy crap
November
Been a long time since I added anything to this site. Turns out having a baby, an awesome one at that, takes up most of one's time. Plus work, well..... work is just that. And, it's Fall, and my free time begs to be spent outside.
The time away from the studio has given me some food for thought. After some failed attempts at new drawings, reflections on my last show, and my rapidly changing perspectives and world views (thanks to Arlo, and a little fine aging on my part) I've had the fortune to mull over a new direction in my work.
I won't blab on about it here. I've never found that writing my thoughts down ever captured what I was truly thinking anyway. But as it pertains to this website, and my future goals as an artist, I will say that I hope to have a new body of drawings and paintings done by January. I will also be editing this site down a bit. So some older work, or work I no longer find as relevant will be taken off as new work is added. I will most likely revisit my statement as well, since my ideas have shifted, grown, and ultimately changed.
hope you are all well. if I haven't called, emailed, or seen you out and about.....sorry.....such is my life right now, and I dig it that way.

September - finally.
I've moved some work around and continue to organize the website to make it concise and complete. The new body of drawings is coming along well...I'm very excited about where they are going.
I had the pleasure to grab a beer and talk shop with Gregory Euclide last Friday...his work is top notch in my book, check it out.

I've started a new body of drawings....working out the details of what they'll become, but I'm excited with their progress so far. Hopefully I'll have a few done by Sept.
Mars to Sirius will be updated very soon.
If you're in the Twin Cities during the RNC, an old employer of mine, Coffee News, is going to be a hang out for protesters looking to grab a coffee, snack, and non-neo-con atmosphere. Many local artists, including myself are donating art for their walls to give a proper representation of our cities to visitors.

It's been a while since I added anything to the old website.
Turns out, having a 4 month-old takes up a good deal of one's time. Arlo, Lucretia, and I are just having a blast being a family. Not much time to update the site, document work, or make new work. But 1- I'm happy to not think about art much besides brainstorming on a new body of work, and 2- being a dad, and having my priorities and lifestyle radically shifted has given me a new, refreshed perspective and what it means to be an artist and an art patron.
I sold a great piece to a great person from the Umber show, and managed to make two amazing trades for work that I'm stoked to have on my walls from artists I respect. Along with the nitty gritty of the show, I also got some great feedback and critiques that are helping me forge ahead with a better approach and attitude.
For some reason, I almost just want to see, read, and support art right now more than make it myself.....art feels very generous and inviting again. I think that having Arlo effected me in a way that I didn't see coming. I suddenly have less time to complain about the art world and "scene"....I think I'm just happy to be able to make work and have a handful of people dig it, plain and simple.
So...I'll be shooting a few new drawings that were in the Umber show and posting them within weeks. I've put up a couple more in the 2008 drawing portfolio. I'm formulating the media, size, and presentation of a new body of drawings which I've JUST started to tinker with...my goal is to have a decent body by next Spring. No projects, shows, or other "art" commitments on the horizon..and that feels great. I have some plans for shows, people, and projects...but mostly in my head right now.
Cheers- hope your summer is swimming along

"There may be a socio-political screed of some sort intended by Jake Keeler's nasty tangles of black plastic, gunnysacks and rags."
Mary Abbey - Star Tribune
Ms. Abbey didn't care much for my piece, or the exhibition....but her description of my work is apt, thanks Mary. I'll be speaking about said piece briefly at a lecture event put on by the Minnesota Museum of American Art, this Thursday Jan. 10th, visit their website for more info- www.mmaa.org
